Chelsea Halt PSG Juggernaut to Win Club World Cup

Chelsea’s reputation for springing surprises in big games was on full display at MetLife Stadium as Enzo Maresca’s side turned the tables on heavy favourites Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) to win the expanded FIFA Club World Cup.

Given little chance to lift the trophy going into the final against the European champions, Cole Palmer stole the spotlight with two goals and an assist as the Europa Conference League winners thumped their rivals 3-0.

The result sent shockwaves through world football. PSG, who had breezed past Bayern Munich and Real Madrid in the previous rounds, arrived in New Jersey as heavy favourites. But Chelsea had other ideas.

Palmer opened the scoring in the 21st minute with a composed left-foot finish after Malo Gusto’s pass found him in space. Minutes later, he doubled the lead with a brilliant solo effort, cutting inside from the right and wrong-footing Lucas Beraldo before calmly slotting the ball past Gianluigi Donnarumma.

Before PSG could settle, Palmer turned provider, sliding a perfectly weighted pass to João Pedro, who made it 3-0 for Chelsea before the break.

After dominating Europe all season, PSG crumbled under pressure. Lucas Beraldo, starting in place of injured defenders Willian Pacho and Lucas Hernández, was repeatedly exposed. Désiré Doué missed a golden chance early on, and by the time João Pedro added Chelsea’s third, the Parisians were chasing shadows.

Frustration boiled over in the 86th minute when João Neves was sent off for pulling Marc Cucurella’s hair—a fitting end to a nightmare final for Luis Enrique’s side.

This wasn’t just a Chelsea win. It was a statement. Against the most in-form team in world football, the underdogs came, saw, and conquered.

With the footballing season finally over, the eyes now turn to what awaits the teams in just few week’s time as the new campaigns kick off. But thanks to Cole Palmer, Chelsea are kings of the world and for the next four years can boast an emblem that symbolises their ability to win when it matters the most.
