Australia has produced some of the finest pace bowlers in the history of cricket, but none may come close to Mitchell Starc when all is said and done.
Since making his debut in 2010, the left-armer has become one of the most complete bowlers in world cricket, and the latest example of his mastery came during Australia’s demolition job of the West Indies in Jamaica during the third Test match.
Tasked with defending 204 runs for his side, Mitchell Starc marked his 100th Test by ripping through the West Indies’ top order to become just the fourth Australian bowler to take 400 Test wickets. Only Shane Warne (708), Glenn McGrath (563), and Nathan Lyon (562*) have taken more wickets for Australia in Test cricket.

Starc also reached the milestone in 19,062 deliveries—the second-fastest in terms of balls bowled after South Africa’s Dale Steyn. In terms of matches, he ranks 12th after reaching the milestone in his 100th Test, with Muralidaran leading the table after reaching that figure in just 72 matches.
| Player | Opposition | Ground | Time | Mat |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Muttiah Muralitharan | v Zimbabwe | Galle | 9y 137d | 72 |
| Ravichandran Ashwin | v England | Ahmedabad | 9y 110d | 77 |
| Rirchard Hadlee | v India | Christchurch | 17y 0d | 80 |
| Dale Steyn | v Bangladesh | Mirpur | 10y 225d | 80 |
| Rangana Herath | v Pakistan | Abu Dhabi | 18y 6d | 84 |
The 35-year-old is just the 18th bowler overall to take 400 test wickets and the 10th pacer to achieve this feat.
Already one of the most dominant bowlers, Starc’s latest performance once again underlined his status as one of the modern greats. Both Mitchell Starc and Australia will be hoping to continue their domination in the coming years, with the bowler climbing the wicket-taking charts and the Aussies looking to add more silverware to the already crowded trophy cabinet because of Starc’s performances.
