Punjab has introduced QR code technology to its property tax system in a bid to curb fraudulent challans and improve transparency.
According to Umar Sher Chatha, Director General of Excise, the issuance of property tax notices featuring QR codes began on July 15.
In the first phase, 2.5 million QR-coded notices and challans have been distributed across all regions and districts of Punjab. Under this new system, inspectors will scan each notice upon delivery, instantly recording the information in an automated database to ensure accuracy and transparency.
DG Excise Umar Sher Chatha explained that this initiative will eliminate the problem of fake and duplicate challans. The new approach is also expected to bring millions of previously unregistered properties into the tax system.
Additionally, GIS-based data collection will help create precise property records at both city and district levels.
The updated system will make it easier to identify property tax defaulters, potentially increasing government revenue by Rs 7 to 10 billion. Citizens will also benefit from the new notices, as they can now complete their online tax assessments and PT 10 form submissions more conveniently.
