Islamabad’s Excise and Taxation Department has unveiled plans to implement a vehicle registration system modeled after the United States.
A recent notification details that, moving forward, registration numbers will be assigned to vehicle owners rather than to the vehicles themselves.
With this change, each individual will receive a unique number plate that remains permanently associated with their name.
This updated policy will be applicable to both newly registered and already existing vehicles. When a vehicle is sold, the seller’s registration number will be deactivated, and the new owner will be issued a different registration number.
The notification also mentions that owners will have the option to keep their registration number for up to one year, even if they do not currently possess a vehicle. If the number is not linked to a vehicle within that period, it will be revoked.
According to the Director General of Excise and Taxation Islamabad, this new approach is designed to make the registration process more transparent and user-friendly.

A long overdue change. I think Pakistan was one of the few countries in the world following this idiotic approach of associating the license plate with the car itself.
People pay a lot of money to get personalized number plates just to realise you are forced to sell it with the car rather than being able to transfer the same plate to a different vehicle.
I hope other provinces follow suit as well.
dude !! thats not correct. even though the number was associated with the car, but you still was able to get the number plate from the car you just sold, but you had to convey it to the buyer that you are not selling the number just the car. I am telling you because I went through the procedure.

This is excellent if it happens because when you sell car, you have to practically beg the purchaser to transfer vehicle to their name. Now number plate ownership will remain with owner so its a big headache solved.
America should also follow in other activities, to reduce the numbers of ministers,and otherwelfar activities,not this lavish one

Apparently, this idea is complicated as well as confusing. Why do we need to follow American System of Vehicle Registration, when the one in vogue is fairly good and comprehensible. We should follow the West in Scientific and Technological advancement, along with good social values. The idea behind intended switching over to US vehicle registration is indiscernible and is aptly described in a proverb_ One who blindly imitates others loses face!

Why vehicle registration is not centralized linking it with NADRA data base. This will ensure transparency and will avoid forgery/tempering of number and record.

Country should have identical system through out instead of aping western system… Why switch to a new methodology, Sind recently changed all number plates with Ajrak design plys code and now this out of blue, someone’s brainchild in Islamabad to ape US numbering system….
It should be implemented all over Pakistan as many criminals buy used cars and never transfer in their names : in USA and many other countries number plate registration number is issued to a person owner sell car without registration number plate
