The Punjab Police in India is under fire after its official X (formerly Twitter) account posted an AI-generated meme of George Floyd to threaten its public for carrying a Pakistani flag.
The image, which quickly went viral before being deleted, depicted a recreation of the infamous scene where George Floyd, a Black American man, was killed by a Minneapolis police officer in 2020.
In the controversial meme, the police officer’s face was replaced with the Indian flag, while the man on the ground—resembling George Floyd—was faceless and positioned next to a Pakistani flag. The accompanying message read: “If you are caught with this flag, be prepared to suffer the consequences.”
The post was met with immediate and widespread backlash. In response, the Punjab Police quickly deleted the post within minutes, but not before screenshots had spread widely online.
Social media users across India and beyond expressed shock and disgust, criticizing the Punjab Police for using a painful moment in American history as a tool for intimidation.
Many Indians called out the police for what they described as “stupid” and “irresponsible” behavior, especially coming from an official government account.
This is an actual tweet by Punjab Police India. They chose an image which depicts the worst racism and police brutality in US to score a point. This image was viral worldwide to represent Police Atrocity but Punjab Police thought this is what they stand for pic.twitter.com/o8pBtliDPJ

People also accused the police of racism and insensitivity, pointing out that the meme trivialized the murder of George Floyd and the global movement for racial justice that followed.
As of now, the Punjab Police has not issued a formal apology or statement addressing the controversy.
