Pakistan’s U16 men’s volleyball team returned home to a rousing reception on Sunday night after clinching the Asian Championship title in Thailand. At Lahore airport, fans, officials, and family members gathered in large numbers to celebrate the young athletes who went unbeaten throughout the tournament and secured a thrilling victory over Iran in a nail-biting 3-2 final.
The atmosphere was electric as the players arrived draped in national flags, greeted with garlands, and chants of “Pakistan Zindabad.” The welcome reflected the pride and emotion their victory stirred across the country.
This was Pakistan’s first-ever title at the Asian U16 Volleyball Championship, and the manner in which it was achieved made it even more special.
In recognition of their historic feat, the Pakistan Sports Board (PSB) announced a significant cash reward under its revised 2024 Cash Award Policy. Each of the 12 players will receive Rs600,000, amounting to a total of Rs7.2 million for the squad. Additionally, the head coach will be awarded Rs1 million, bringing the total prize money for players and staff to Rs8.2 million.
The PSB, in its official statement, noted that gold medallists in team events at the continental level are entitled to 30 per cent of the individual award value per athlete. Coaching staff are allocated 50 per cent of the team total.
“These young athletes have brought immense pride to Pakistan,” said a PSB spokesperson regarding the country’s U16 volleyball team. “Their achievement deserves to be recognised, not only through celebration but by ensuring they are supported and rewarded for their excellence.”
The spokesperson confirmed that the disbursement process is already underway and will be completed in the coming days. Payments will be made directly to each athlete and coach listed on the official tournament roster, following standard documentation procedures.
Pakistan’s triumph in the Asian U16 Volleyball Championship in Thailand has not only revived national interest in volleyball, but has also highlighted the potential of youth development programs in lesser-funded sports. With support and visibility growing, the federation and fans alike will hope this win becomes a turning point for the sport in the country.
The Asian title is already under their belts, and the team will be hopeful of a strong showing on the world’s grandest stage next.
