Major Road in Lahore to Get Underground Trackless Tram

The Punjab government has decided to build the Yellow Line’s “Cut and Cover” project underground along Lahore’s Canal Road.

According to a private news channel, citing official sources , the Lahore Development Authority (LDA) and National Engineering Services Pakistan (NESPAK) have begun work on the design and cost estimation of the project, which will stretch from Thokar Niaz Baig to Harbanspura.

Officials say the underground corridor will feature a trackless tram system—similar in standard to the Orange Line stations on Mall Road—without disturbing the city’s green areas or cutting any trees. The tram will run beneath Canal Road using the cut-and-cover method.

To accommodate the construction, both sides of Canal Road will be widened by 12 to 14 feet. A signal-free underground route will be created for the trackless wheel tram, after which the road will be restored and reopened for regular traffic.

LDA’s Chief Engineer stated that while the earlier proposed Yellow Line main track along Canal Road was estimated at Rs. 80 billion, the revised cost for the underground cut-and-cover alignment is currently being assessed.

  • We can’t even get an underground walk way so people can cross roads easily.

No one is going to trust their lives with this sheet the floods

    • True.. also instead of spending on Industry and Research & Development.. all foreign loans are wasted in this way.. afsos

  • I think two parallel canals or one bigger expanded width wise canal with boats will be a better idea as far as cost, close to natire and water reservoir purpose is concerned with gates to maintain minimum and maximum water level as per requirement.

  • Poor country but hi class interest. Karachi earns revenue most, Punjab utilized most. It’s all waste. Karachi is worst than Mohenjo-Daro but our beloved form 47 govt investing in Punjab to gain vote bank. Result will remain zero

    • Bro itx not about lahore or karachi . It’s all about punjab and sindh governments. There’s a clear difference between both punjab had far more higher development budget than sindh due to its population but that does actually means punjabi rulers are mainly owners of thevmain development firms that’s why punjab is developing more on the other hands sindhi rulers are mainly land lords and they have interest in just their business in this way pmln business is also developing punjab but in sindh they don’t care because of their lack of interest in this business

  • It is will of the provincial govt either to invest on infrastructure or make corruption. Punjab Govt focus is to develop Punjab.

  • How can this be achieved by not cutting trees? Already, Punjab has undergone significant temperature increases due to loss of tree cover and no steps had been taken to safeguard our more than 50 year old trees. They are our national treasure. Public hearing should be organised in order to assess what people actually think about this project. Environmental impact should be published in major newspapers as it is of utmost importance, keeping in view how climate change has devastated our country.
