Foreign Universities Want to Establish Campuses in Pakistan

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif chaired a significant meeting focused on enhancing the higher education sector across the province. Several critical decisions were made to bring about meaningful reforms and raise academic standards in Punjab’s colleges and universities.

During the session, the Higher Education Department delivered a comprehensive briefing. It was decided that three major institutions—Government College University, Government College for Women University, and the University of Engineering and Technology—will be developed as model campuses to serve as benchmarks for academic excellence.

Officials shared that prestigious international universities from the UK, South Korea, and Kazakhstan, including the University of London, Brunel University, the University of Gloucestershire, and the University of Leicester, have expressed interest in launching their campuses in Punjab. Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz welcomed this initiative, highlighting its potential to enhance the province’s global educational profile.

Key Decisions and Announcements:

College Management Councils: The establishment of College Management Councils was approved for public colleges to improve governance and institutional performance.

  • KPI-Based Evaluation: Universities in Punjab will adopt a Key Performance Indicators (KPI) system to evaluate faculty effectiveness and assess the performance of Vice Chancellors more systematically.
  • Underperforming Colleges Report: The Chief Minister called for a detailed report on underachieving institutions to ensure consistent academic quality and accountability.
  • Education Vigilance Squad: Approval was given to form a dedicated squad to carry out surprise inspections focusing on student attendance, cleanliness, teaching quality, and general discipline in educational institutions.
  • Scholarship and Laptop Scheme: Updates were provided on the CM Punjab Talented Scholarship and Laptop Scheme, which has attracted over 19,000 applications from across the country. The Chief Minister instructed authorities to enhance the program’s effectiveness and accessibility.
  • Strategic Plan 2025-2029: Discussions also centered on the forthcoming Higher Education Strategic Plan (2025-2029), which will prioritize innovative teaching, research, digital learning tools, and creative knowledge exchange in universities.
  • Autonomy and Governance Reforms: A proposal to implement institutional autonomy and governance reforms in public sector universities was also endorsed to enhance administrative efficiency.
  • Higher Education Conference: The Chief Minister gave initial approval to organize Punjab’s first Higher Education Conference to address institutional challenges and explore collaborative solutions.

Additionally, a separate review of commerce colleges was requested to identify inactive institutions and strategize their revival.

These steps represent a major stride in overhauling Punjab’s higher education landscape, aligning it with international standards and expanding opportunities for students across the province.
