The Punjab government is moving forward with an ambitious infrastructure plan that includes the construction of two flyovers and an underpass at Jinnah Park and Ammar Chowk.
The project’s preliminary cost estimate is Rs. 10 billion, according to the Communication and Works Department, which has submitted the PC-I for approval.
A senior official from the district administration told a national daily that the PC-I has been forwarded to the Punjab Planning Department and is expected to be reviewed in a meeting next week.
The Jinnah Park Underpass and Flyover project alone is expected to cost Rs. 5.2 billion. The flyover will span 1,510 feet in length, 24 feet in width, and will be 16.75 feet high. The accompanying underpass will measure 1,265 feet in length and also 24 feet in width.
Meanwhile, the flyover at Ammar Chowk will be significantly larger, stretching 4,003 feet in length and 28 feet wide, with the same height of 16.75 feet. Its estimated cost stands at Rs. 4.13 billion.
Traffic engineering experts estimate that over 131,500 vehicles pass through Kutchery Chowk daily, primarily from the Old Airport and Jhelum Road areas. The new flyovers and underpass are expected to ease congestion and improve traffic flow.
An earlier plan for similar development at Kutchery Chowk was dropped in 2023 after being proposed in 2022.
