Student Files Case Against Summer Vacation Extension in Punjab

The Rawalpindi Bench of the Lahore High Court (LHC) on Monday admitted for hearing a petition challenging the Punjab government’s decision to extend summer vacations in schools.

The development came after a student, Danial, filed a petition against the provincial authorities.

Justice Jawadul Hassan, who heard the case, issued notices to the Punjab education secretary and other respondents, seeking their replies.

Danial’s counsel, Hafiz Waqar Ahmad Awan, argued that the Punjab Education Department had extended the school holidays without justification. He told the court that keeping schools closed for nearly three months was equivalent to “playing with the future of children.”

During the proceedings, Justice Jawad questioned the rationale behind the government’s decision. “Courts have remained open even during wars. What is this practice of shutting schools first for summer and then for fog?” he remarked.

The judge emphasized that education was a fundamental right guaranteed to every child and said students could not be deprived of it. He further noted that parents pay substantial fees with the expectation that their children will continue to receive uninterrupted learning opportunities.

The case will now proceed once the government responds to the court’s notices.

  • Fully agreed. If the vacations have to be announced or extended to this extent to the potentially dangerous regions, like hilly areas then they should be restricted to only those schools situated on those terrains not for the entire province. But who cares?

    • Disagreed. 3 months vacations are used to help kids health and growth. Private schools want kids to be burden beasts.

      • Yes but extending the holidays without any deceleration of formal reason is not the way to take care of the children, perhaps put restrictions on the private educational system. Not extend the holidays.

        • How ? The reason is rain and the fact that extention is upon end of August which is 3 months . So where is the issue ?

Where is the restriction on private school mafia ?

  • Students should not be charged with any types of fees for the summer breaks months as nothing is delivered to them. Salaries to the teachers should be paid from the school’s funds as they earn more than enough as they charge students with heavy fees.
Example. No one pays for buying nothing from market.

    • Very correct. The fees should be paid via school funding, the schools have tons millions of rupees to pay salaries.

  • I m with him. His point of view is clear and logical. They just play the future of students.

      • Calm down, all of the people here complaint bcoz they pay for the school to educate their kids. Not to pay off money to an organization that shuts down for 3 months and just pays teachers salaries.

        • No they don’t. They pay so their kids can get education but not turned into mindless zombies.

  • But the judge should know that summer vacations are given due to the chance of heatstroke and winter/fog holidays are given due to high chances of pneumonia and lung illnesses.
    Children are not learning machines.

  • I m with him. His point of view is clear and logical. They just play the future of students.Waste a lot of money parents pay like fees but school not open why school said pay fees without learning during holidays

  • Yes parents have to pay whole year fees when school only educate our children for at least 5 months which also have unexpected vacations which is too much. Our children’s future is ruining day by day, government should take an action and open schools ASAP. Government should also take an action on paying June and July fees when our children don’t even learn a single word.

    • I agree . Kids should not be charged fee for 3 months vacation.

Bit kids health is compromised as they can’t study the full year

Private schools don’t care about kids health. They want kids attending school every day for 12 months.

3 months are used to help kids recuperate and rest.

  • School should take online classes otherwise we are against to this government’s action.
In summer vacations school should arrange extra curriculum activities like different skills and different computer skills also vacational courses like sewing and baking for girls in this way parents can pay happily pay full vacational fee school wan also charge the full summer vacation charges they are a mafia gang for parents

    • Do you know, there is a flood threat. Buner in KPK got flooded, Karachi got flooded, next Lahore is on high alert, then Sialkot. So, what do you expect, kids will go to school on boats? I agree with that private schools have become a mafia and shouldn’t take 3 months fees when education is only for 5 months.. but.. keeping in mind the current state of affairs, it’s better to keep the schools closed

  • His point of view is somewhat right, but in the 90’s students also used to get 3 months summer break, it’s not a big deal
Extras are those due to fog and political parties rallies, those problems should b solved first,I think

    • No it isnt. His point of view is wrong. 3 months vacation is required for kids to rest and recuperate. They are not adults and not to be treated as adults.

They need growth rest and relaxation so they can grow up healthy.

The vacations are used for kids to rest and enjoy their childhood.

This kid is being used by the private school mafia.

  • I m with the government decision..if the children face the problems the same parents will blame the government…in the given situation of floods and heat in the country this is the best decision of government…but some people have the habit of arguing every thing..they will never b satisfied..

  • Clearly this article is to generate hype . The fact that a student who’s a minor was able to move court means private schools want to force govt to make children beasts of burden

Summer vacations are to make sure kids can rest and study at home as their bodies get tired from school work. Their growth and health during scorching heat is compromised otherwise.

How was a kid able to move court and how was he able to find a lawyer and funded the case ?

Schools should be closed for 3 months no matter what they say.

    Do not hurt the kids.

  • Oh wow if Courts are open during conflict . How is that related to schools ?

Schools are not courts. By that logic why can’t we send judges back to schools . Or replace judges with school kids ?
I mean will the honorable judge be happy to be replaced by much more honorable 5 yr old from kindergarten ?

    Would be an improvement

  • I cant side with him cuz even though studies are important, the weather condition is not sustainable for kids as every days kids pass out from the scorching heat of the sun and the classes also only have fans which don’t help during extreme heat waves and during winters the fog/smog causes a lot of accidents due to limited view. It’s not the government’s fault that the the weather is this bad and they r doing their best to protect the children’s health bcuz the studies won’t matter if the child is not in their best health. And for the ppl who say they shouldn’t give fees just remember that the teachers pay is literally the fees that we pay, just bcuz the kid is at home doesn’t mean we can just stop giving the teachers they pay because they also have bills to pay and family to take care of and some teachers r extremely dependent upon these pay to provide for their household

  • This is crap 3 months are needed bvz in those 3 months, children need to rest and focus on other stuff rather then just studying like mindless beings. Also the holidays are given to minimise chances of heat stroke and other things that might happen

  • Honestly, as some one who has health issues from both, I find this nice tbh. And to honest (again), it would have been better if the student protested for a better and more fair education system.

  • Oh I thought that health is more important than education ☺️. Not every school have ACs so summers are unbearable. And fog ? Maybe a ‘school’ kid doesn’t realize how dangerous it is!

  • Student ko time aziz hota to kbi Court naa jata… 15 days vacation ki waja sy kon 10 Saal case lary ga..? Do it makes sense. No.

Its a Political matter or someone else sponsored..

Pak Courts are useless, where people stuck for Decades… And when case decided, its challenged and get stuck in upper courts.. People finally agree to compromise and let the oppression continue, we need alternate solution to courts…!

  • The angry guy has a quite sensible point. Although it is difficult to cover syllabus and teach effectively when teaching duration shrinks even by a few days but the importance of rest cannot be stressed enough. Due to poverty, anyone sitting by seems wasting money. But its really important to let children get out of the school routine. In this time children work on thier extracurricular skills and are also saved from scorching heat. Maybe not that hot in Rawalpindi but in majority of other cities, its really hot. Besides, its not for highschool kids, who can endure harsher conditions.
On the other hand, the private schools don’t pay the van guy for summer vacation, while they get full fee. These are thier true profit months and due to this delay its hard for them to get the fee of August.

With good intentions, summer fee should have been used to reduce the amount of fee paid in other months but its used for extra profit instead.

    • Kids are not adults. They have growing body that needs rest and recuperation. A child is not supposed to be buried in books. It affects their growth.

Not only extra burden affects they their bodies and health. But also leads to psychological issues from so much pressure their bodies are not ready to handle.

It leads to damaged youths incapable of handling life.

If kids can’t have a childhood. They’ll never be happy responsible adults.

In medival times , they would give 150 holidays to adults (not kids) so people could recuperate. We barely get 80 days off a year.

  • Vacation extension should have been restricted to seasonal vulnerable areas. Blanket extension badly impact students institutional learning process.

  • i wanna share something as a student of this pakistani education system u guys
dont care just talk as much as u want
our education system is lagging behind and making them stricter doesn’t change the fact wer not on the lvl of children who achieve their education from abroad. its a matter of time when this situation will get worse if we dont act on it the old way of teaching is now over so instead of fighting with each other sit down and face the situation its no holidays that play for our future its this system

  • Bro I have been paying fees for past 3 months approx 25k/m they keep extending the vacations like I’m not receiving any education at all too

  • This is the same guy in class who reminds teacher of test to be taken 😂😂😂 put this guy in library with books and sack his mobile phone as punishment . Until he apologized publicly of hurting millions of students sentiments , health and safety issues as well. You won’t become Einstein by doing this. Absolute hilarious how he get their in court.

  • There is two Pakistan in Pakistan federal govt give two month break and they open school when close for fog on Saturday. Why three months break can they are not avail every weekend leave?? They are also working with day to day short working hours 😉😉😉😉😉 evening classes in school short working hours….

  • The reason for the extended break is due to current weather conditions. Clearly this deluded student is not in their right mind. Also like angry guy said, kid need to recuperate and rest from their studies and also prepare for the upcoming grades
