Kashmir has been hit by torrential rains, breaking a 50-year rainfall record and causing widespread devastation. The valley received 360 mm of rain, which led to the bursting of riverbanks and the destruction of several bridges and roads.
The heavy downpour has severely disrupted daily life, with mobile internet, broadband, and telephone services suspended across the region. Authorities confirmed that the water level in the Jhelum River has risen above the danger mark, increasing the risk of further flooding.
In occupied Jammu and Doda, at least 37 people have lost their lives due to rain-related incidents. Officials have warned that the downpour is expected to continue, and as a precautionary measure, all educational institutions in the valley have been ordered to remain closed.
Meanwhile, the impact of heavy rains has extended beyond Kashmir. Northern Indian states, including Himachal Pradesh and Punjab, have also been badly affected. Rivers in Manali and Pathankot have overflowed, adding to the destruction caused by the extreme weather.
