Sindh MPAs Get Nearly 200% Increase in Salaries

The Sindh Assembly committee has approved a significant increase in the salaries and benefits of provincial lawmakers, raising monthly pay and allowances from Rs. 150,000 to Rs. 430,000. The move represents an almost 200 percent hike.

The decision was made during a meeting of the 18-member committee chaired by Speaker Owais Qadir Shah on Wednesday. Lawmakers from the Pakistan Peoples Party, Muttahida Qaumi Movement, Jamaat e Islami, and PTI backed members attended the session.

Committee member and PPP legislator Imtiaz Shaikh said the revision was based on a comparison with compensation packages offered in other provincial assemblies.

He pointed out that Sindh lawmakers had been drawing lower salaries than their counterparts, particularly in Punjab, where members currently receive around Rs. 500,000 per month.

In addition to the base salary increase, the committee also approved higher annual allowances and daily session allowances. A separate proposal is being drafted to revise the compensation and perks of the chief minister, speaker, deputy speaker, ministers, opposition leader, and parliamentary secretaries.

Earlier this month, the Sindh Assembly passed a bill to enhance the salaries and privileges of its members. The legislation, introduced by Law Minister Ziaul Hassan Lanjar, was unanimously adopted.

It equalizes benefits for government and opposition members, covering house rent, utilities, daily and conveyance allowances, accommodation, travel and mileage, medical expenses, telephone facilities, and office maintenance.
