A farmer in India was taken by surprise when one of his hens laid a blue-colored egg, a highly unusual occurrence that has since attracted widespread attention.
The bird belongs to Syed Noor, who purchased it from a trader two years ago for ₹20 (Rs. 63.92). According to Noor, all ten of his hens are fed the same diet and usually lay white or yellowish eggs. “This is the first time I’ve seen a blue egg,” he said, adding that he has kept the egg safely after its discovery.
News of the rare find quickly spread, drawing curious villagers to Noor’s home to catch a glimpse of the egg.
Local veterinary experts also expressed astonishment. Dr. Ashok, Assistant Director at the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services, noted that while hens occasionally produce greenish or yellow-tinted eggs, a blue one is extremely rare. He explained that the pigment biliverdin, sometimes present in hens, can cause unusual shell coloring.
Hafeez, a friend of Noor, confirmed the hen had consistently laid white eggs until two days earlier. “Its colour is shocking. I’ve never seen or even heard of a blue egg before,” he remarked.
Veterinary Officer Dr. Raghu Nayak further explained that biliverdin pigmentation, genetic mutations, or even dietary changes might be behind the unusual colour.
Noor, who photographed the egg, said the story has since been picked up by local media, sparking even more interest.
Experts point out that blue eggs are typically associated with certain breeds, such as the Araucana from Chile and the Whiting True Blue Chicken, a hybrid developed in the United States in the 1990s.
