Punjab Launches Clean Water Project in 14 Districts

In line with Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz Sharif’s public welfare vision, the provincial government has initiated a large-scale project to eliminate the problem of saline and arsenic-contaminated water.

According to a Housing Department spokesperson, the “Chief Minister Clean Water Program” will begin with its first phase in 14 districts, including Rahim Yar Khan, Rajanpur, Dera Ghazi Khan, Layyah, Muzaffargarh, Kot Addu, Bhakkar, Mianwali, Khushab, Talagang, Chakwal, Jhelum, Rawalpindi, and Attock. The formal approval of the project is expected in the 24th Punjab Development Working Party (PDWP) meeting.

The program involves setting up water filtration plants, constructing small dams, and installing a Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) monitoring system to ensure a reliable supply of clean and safe drinking water.

Filtration plants will be established at schools, basic health units, police stations, madrasas, and other public institutions, with site selection being carried out in collaboration with district administrations. A central control room has also been proposed to enable real-time monitoring through the SCADA system.

The spokesperson emphasized that the project, initiated under the direct instructions of the Chief Minister, aims to make unsafe water drinkable and provide immediate relief to millions of people. He termed the initiative a significant step toward sustainable development and safeguarding citizens’ right to health.
