Fresh Flood Threat in Sutlej River After India Releases More Water

India has once again released water into the Sutlej River, raising fears of a massive new flood and sparking concerns over violations of the Indus Waters Treaty.

According to the Ministry of Water Resources, the Indian High Commission has officially warned of high-level floods at two locations along the Sutlej. At Harike and Ferozepur, the risk of extremely high flood levels has been flagged. Following the alert, the ministry has directed all relevant departments to remain on emergency footing.

Meanwhile, raging waters have already caused devastation in Jalalpur Pirwala, where embankments broke and dozens of settlements were submerged. Evacuations are underway, with Punjab Chief Minister personally monitoring overnight rescue operations. Additional boats and three helicopters have been deployed to assist in shifting people to safety.

In Vehari, the timely opening of the bridge helped avert floodwaters from entering the city. However, the situation remains critical as the Sutlej, Ravi, and Chenab rivers converge, creating dangerous flood conditions.

At Head Panjnad, water levels have reached an extremely high flood stage, submerging several villages in Alipur tehsil of Muzaffargarh. Thousands of acres of crops in Khairpur Tamewali, Rahim Yar Khan, and Liaqatpur have also been damaged. Authorities warn that within hours, a major flood wave will pass through Kot Mithan in Rajanpur, threatening more areas downstream.
