Karachi on Edge as Hub Dam Nears Maximum Storage Capacity After Torrential Rains

The Hub Dam in Karachi has nearly reached its maximum capacity following heavy monsoon rains across Sindh and Balochistan. The Irrigation Department confirmed that the water level rose to 338 feet, up from 335 feet a day earlier. With the maximum capacity set at 339 feet, only one foot of storage remains before overflow.

Possible Spillway Release

Authorities warned that the dam’s spillway may be opened at any time to release excess water. The Ministry of Water Resources, WAPDA, and the Lasbela administration supervise this safety measure.

Evacuation Orders Issued

Disaster management officials instructed residents living near the Hub River to evacuate immediately. Operators of nearby crush plants were also told to remove equipment and workers from riverbanks to reduce the risk of flood-related damage.

Role of the Dam

Located about 56 kilometers from Karachi, the Hub Dam supplies 100 million gallons of water daily to the city and the nearby areas of Balochistan. The latest rains in the surrounding mountains and hilly regions rapidly filled the reservoir to near capacity.

Monitoring and Safety Measures

Authorities said they are closely monitoring the situation and will release water gradually to maintain safety and prevent flooding.

Thado Dam Overflowed Earlier

Earlier, Thado Dam in Karachi’s Gadap area overflowed due to heavy rainfall. The rising water prompted an emergency in Malir’s Memon Goth. Floodwaters also reached the M-9 Motorway near Jamali Bridge, disrupting traffic between Karachi and Hyderabad.
