Islamabad Police sealed Strays Home Animal Rescue, a registered non-governmental organization (NGO) operating in Sector D-13, on Friday, following orders from Assistant Commissioner Yasir Nazir.
Shelter staff and veterinarians were arrested during the operation, leaving hundreds of rescued animals, many of them sick, disabled, or injured, locked inside without care, food, or medical assistance.
Some animals were at risk of bladder rupture as they could not pass urine without help, raising fears of mass fatalities inside the facility.
The shelter had been legally operating under a No Objection Certificate (NOC) issued in 2024, yet police also lodged a criminal case against the staff and vets. They were accused of spreading disease, neglecting animals, and creating a public nuisance.
On Saturday, the detained workers were produced in court and granted bail, leading to the de-sealing of the shelter.
However, the organization is being pressurized to cease operations and vacate the premises within seven days.
When contacted by ProPakistani for a statement, the AC was unavailable.
However, one of his staff members said that locals gave an application to the AC that animals cause disturbance and that we cannot sleep at night. The locals also said that there’s a lot of smell in the area, so the AC acted on the application.
