The Punjab Wildlife Department has introduced new rules requiring the mandatory registration of several parrot species, including Alexandrine, Rose-ringed, Slaty-headed, and Plum-headed parrots. The initiative, announced on Tuesday, is designed to combat illegal trading and strengthen conservation efforts, 24NewsHD reported.
Under the notification, all parrots kept as pets or bred in captivity must now be registered under the second schedule of Wildlife Regulations. Owners will be required to pay a registration fee of Rs 1,000 per bird.
The department has also rolled out a new system to classify breeders into small-scale and large-scale categories, ensuring better monitoring. In addition, sales of parrots will now be restricted to licensed dealers only, a move officials say is vital to ending unregulated transactions.
“The core objective is to safeguard these species and eliminate their illegal trade,” a Wildlife Department spokesperson stated.
Authorities added that the updated framework is expected not only to regulate the pet market but also to encourage responsible breeding practices across Punjab.
