Pakistan Post Resumes International Mail Service

Pakistan Post has restarted international mail operations after a two-week suspension, routing consignments through Qatar Post under a new arrangement. According to officials, Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) will now transport mail to Doha, where Qatar Post will dispatch it onward through its global network.

The shift follows Etihad Airways’ suspension of services on September 1 over unpaid dues of more than Rs200 million, which left over 6,000 letters and parcels stuck in Pakistan. Only PIA had continued carrying mail during the suspension, but its limited routes meant thousands of international parcels could not be delivered.

The backlog prompted the federal government to seek Qatar Post’s assistance. Talks held on the sidelines of a postal conference in the UAE paved the way for an agreement allowing Pakistan Post to use Qatar’s Closed Transit Service.

Director Abid Mehmood confirmed that services have now resumed, covering all categories of mail, including letters, parcels, and Express Mail Service (EMS). He said Pakistan Post had sought financial support from the finance ministry to avoid similar disruptions in the future.

Mail to the United States remains restricted under a new tax regime, though updated regulations are expected to ease the suspension.
