China Eastern Airlines has announced a new route that will become the world’s longest direct flight, connecting Shanghai, China, to Buenos Aires, Argentina.
The flight will cover approximately 12,229 miles (19,650 kilometers) and is scheduled to begin on December 4, 2025, operating twice weekly in each direction.

- Flight Numbers: MU745 (Shanghai to Buenos Aires) and MU746 (Buenos Aires to Shanghai)
- Aircraft: Boeing 777-300ER
- Duration: About 25.5 hours from Shanghai to Buenos Aires and 29 hours for the return flight
- Stopover: A two-hour technical stop in Auckland, New Zealand, is planned, during which passengers will remain onboard.

This route marks China Eastern Airlines’ first direct connection to South America, reducing the need for stopovers in the United States or Europe. It is expected to enhance connectivity between Asia and South America, benefiting tourism, business travel, and cultural exchange.
The current record for long-haul flights includes a 19-hour route between Singapore and New York, demonstrating the growing ability of airlines to operate ultra-long-haul services.
