The Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge in Southwest China’s Guizhou province is set to open to traffic on September 28, marking the completion of over three years of construction, local authorities announced on Wednesday.
Stretching 2,890 meters with a main span of 1,420 meters, the bridge soars 625 meters above the river, making it the highest bridge in the world. It will also hold the record as the largest-span bridge ever built in a mountainous region, according to the provincial government.
Zhang Yin, head of the provincial transport department, said the project introduced several innovations in wind-resistance and high-altitude construction. It has already secured 21 patents, and some of its technical advancements have been added to national bridge construction standards.
Guizhou has emerged as a global hub for bridge engineering, with more than 32,000 bridges either completed or under construction. The province is home to three of the world’s tallest bridges, and nearly half of the planet’s 100 highest bridges are located there.
