Two Pakistani Cities Ranked Among World’s Most Populated

The global population continues to surge, and several major cities are seeing rapid increases in density.

According to the latest data released by World Population Review, Tokyo remains the world’s most populous city despite recording a slight decline in growth. Meanwhile, Karachi ranks 12th and Lahore 20th, keeping Pakistan’s two largest cities among the world’s megacities but outside the top 10.

Tokyo holds the top position with a population of 37.03 million, though it experienced a small decline of 0.21 percent compared to last year. India’s capital, New Delhi, comes second with 34.66 million people, showing a growth rate of 2.54 percent.

Shanghai, China, follows in third place with 30.48 million residents, an increase of 2.06 percent from 2024.

In fourth place is Dhaka, Bangladesh, where the population jumped by 3 percent to 24.65 million, while Cairo, Egypt, stands fifth with 23.07 million people. Other cities in the top 10 include São Paulo, Brazil (22.99 million), Beijing, China (22.59 million), and Mumbai, India (22.09 million).

The report shows that Karachi has 18.07 million residents, placing it 12th after Chongqing, China (18.17 million). Lahore’s population has reached 14.82 million, making it the 20th largest city worldwide by population.
