The Pakistan Environmental Protection Agency (Pak-EPA) has announced a citywide crackdown on smoke-emitting vehicles in the federal capital starting November 17, as part of a broader effort to curb rising air pollution and smog ahead of winter.
The campaign will be conducted jointly with the Islamabad Police, Islamabad Traffic Police (ITP), and the Islamabad Transport Authority (ITA), under the supervision of the Ministry of Climate Change and Environmental Coordination. Officials said snap inspections and on-the-spot emission tests will be carried out across the city, with violators facing fines or impoundment of their vehicles.
Mohammad Saleem Shaikh, spokesperson for the climate change ministry, said smog season poses serious health and environmental risks every year. “Protecting ourselves, our families, and our environment from the harmful effects of air pollution and smog is a collective responsibility,” he emphasized.
Pak-EPA has set up static testing centers and mobile inspection units at key locations, including D-Chowk near the old Parade Ground, F-9 Park, and the Islamabad Expressway.
Residents have been urged to get their vehicles tested for emissions and obtain clearance stickers before the crackdown begins. They can contact the Pak-EPA office at 051-9250713 during working hours for information about testing points.
