Electric Bus Service Linking Four Major Punjab Cities Under Consideration

Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) Lahore Dr. Athar Waheed has proposed an ambitious plan to tackle growing traffic congestion, road accidents, and carbon emissions in the provincial capital.

According to Dr. Waheed, around 800,000 to 1 million vehicles and motorcycles enter Lahore daily, while 400,000 to 500,000 leave the city, contributing to severe smog, traffic jams, and road mishaps.

To address these challenges, the CTO has suggested connecting nearby cities with Lahore through an electric bus (E-bus) and metro train system. In the first phase, E-bus services will be launched between Lahore, Kasur, Nankana Sahib, and Sheikhupura. In the second phase, these routes will be linked to an intercity train network.

Dr. Waheed said the initiative would not only reduce travel costs and commute time but also help curb vehicular emissions and improve air quality.

The proposal has been formally sent to the Commissioner Lahore for review and implementation. If approved, it is expected to play a key role in promoting sustainable urban transport and easing the city’s growing environmental burden.
