Students at the University of Karachi staged a protest on Monday to draw attention to the deteriorating condition of the university’s transport buses, 24NewsHD TV reported.
The demonstration disrupted traffic on University Road leading to Safura, forcing authorities to divert vehicles towards Samama and Johar Chowrangi to ease congestion.
Protesting students voiced frustration over the university’s poor facilities despite what they described as “heavy fees” being charged. One student remarked that the administration collects significant revenue but fails to ensure basic services and safety for students.
The protesters also expressed anger over the recent death of a fellow student, demanding accountability from the university administration.
The deceased, Aniqah Saeed, a second-year student of the Social Work Department, tragically lost her life after being struck by a university point bus on campus near the Dr. Mehmood Hussain Library. Eyewitnesses said Aniqah had just gotten off the same bus and was walking towards her department when the vehicle’s rear tyres ran over her.
She was immediately taken to a nearby hospital by bystanders but succumbed to her injuries shortly after. The incident has since sparked outrage and renewed calls for improved transport safety and student welfare on campus.
