Sindh Raises Passing Marks and Ends Traditional Marking System

The Sindh Universities and Boards Department has finalized a new grading policy for students in classes 9 to 12, which will be implemented from the upcoming academic session.

One of the most notable changes is the increase in the passing threshold students will now need to secure at least 40% to pass a subject, up from the previous 33%.

According to the revised system, student results will now be announced in terms of grades rather than total marks or percentages.

The department has also introduced a comprehensive grading scale. Students obtaining between 50% and 59% will receive a D grade. A score between 60% and 69% will result in a C grade, while 70% to 74% qualifies for a B grade. Those scoring 75% to 79% will earn a B+, and 80% to 84% will be awarded a B++ grade.

Higher-performing students will be recognized with top-tier grades: 85% to 89% will receive an A grade, and those scoring 90% to 94% will be given an A+. A score between 95% and 100% will also fall under the A+ category, as the system currently allows dual classification in the highest bracket.

The department stated that this revised grading approach is designed to improve fairness and reduce pressure on students. It also brings the province’s education system closer to the frameworks used in international examinations, potentially making it easier for students to apply for foreign universities.

Education boards across Sindh will adopt the new system simultaneously, and awareness campaigns are expected to inform schools, teachers, and parents about the transition before it officially takes effect next year.

  • I don’t understand, We have to move like formative assessment instead of relying much on Summarive assessment, It will totally change the way of assessment. In summative assessment we in sindh only checking the person Memory Management, Whether every student have different Memory Perception. We have to checkout Various perceptive to avoid these ratafication mechanism in exams. We cannot judge the students Yearly or quarterly performance based on Exam day summative assessment.

If we do change our policies regarding the assessment to encourage students final output,
My suggestions are so valuable, if implement it will change the way of teaching and learning.

  • This will further increase pressure n burden on students to achieve higher grades failing which they will be further frustrated. Non sense government of ppp n non sense decisions… Can’t expect anything good from them except corruption…

    • You are Right Mr. Asif, don’t what the hell is B+ and more worst B++.. students capable of A grade are now B grade students thanks to PPP government..

  • This will further increase pressure n burden on students to achieve higher grades this will increase more ratio of failure and failing students which they will be further more frustrated. Non sense system and non sense decisions… Can’t expect anything good from them except non sensible decisions

    This is bulshit!

  • Such grading system is good but cannot guarantee FAIRNESS. Students from various cities of Sind who were given 95% & above by their respective boards, were failed in the entrance test at NED. Students of Karachi board are also suffering due to Karachi Domicile and others are enjoying on account of Quota System since early 70’s. Merit has been deliberately avoided. As a result Incompetent & corrupt persons are heading various departments.
Need of the hour is to practically implement JUSTICE.

  • How will the positions be announced. Many students getting highest grade. How to know who is first ,second or third.

  • This will allow the board to make more money from students. Right now students were paying around 45k for an A1 grade even with just 80 to 85 marks. Now schools will take money for practical marks, the board will take money for each subject, the results, and even the key. If the purpose of this system was to help students apply for international universities, then there should be a counselor in every college of Sindh. Most of the time teachers don’t even know about scholarships. My teachers didn’t even know how to write a recommendation letter.

I didn’t pay for marks and still got 71%, that too because of my writing and correct answers. I was told by my classmates and even professors to pay for grades, otherwise I wouldn’t be able to get into medical, so I had to change my career plan and get into computer science and skills. My matriculation results were also bad because I didn’t pay for marks. My classmates who were cheating got 90 to 98% by paying for grades and are now applying for medical universities. They will probably buy their medical results as well.

The corruption in the Sindh board is known to the whole world. Instead of changing the grading system, the education board should focus on good teachers, counselors, and better classrooms.

  • Old system of marking have no issues, the real issue is the educational boards and the people running them. Try to improve the quality of education, fairness in exams. That is the need of the hour.

  • It’s not good because it induce pressure on student they need 90 % marks to fit in grade A and face more difficulties to achieve their future goals and also the admission merit in high level will not accept below B grade in medical and engineering ,commerce field it’s unfair.i think it’s not put country toward better education it leads to more depress the education level of our country .
