Italian authorities have accused a 70-year-old man from Vicenza of faking total blindness for more than five decades, fraudulently collecting over one million euros in disability benefits.
Officials said the man began receiving payments 53 years ago after claiming to have lost his sight in a workplace accident. However, suspicions arose during a recent review by the financial police in Vicenza.
Investigators placed the man under surveillance and gathered video footage that contradicted his claims. He was seen performing everyday tasks without help — including gardening with sharp tools and carefully examining items at local markets before buying them.
Additional evidence revealed that he handled financial transactions on his own, suggesting he was not visually impaired.
The Vicenza prosecutor’s office has now charged him with fraud. His disability pension has been suspended, and authorities have launched efforts to recover the funds he wrongfully obtained.
