24 transgender individuals reportedly consumed poison to protest against police misconduct and indifference.
According to reports, the incident took place in the city of Indore in India’s Madhya Pradesh state, where a video went viral showing several transgender people drinking a poisonous liquid—identified as phenyl—together in an apparent suicide attempt.
Reports suggest the group had been protesting against the sexual assault of one of their community members by two men. However, after the police allegedly failed to take action against the suspects, the protesters resorted to this extreme step in despair.
Following the incident, all 24 individuals were rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors confirmed that their condition is now out of danger.
Police officials stated that efforts are underway to trace and arrest the accused individuals responsible for the assault. Meanwhile, transgender rights groups across several Indian cities have condemned the incident and are demanding justice and stricter action against those involved.
