The Punjab government has received a fleet of 87 air-conditioned electric buses from China, marking a major step toward introducing eco-friendly and affordable public transport in Rawalpindi and Islamabad.
According to official sources, the project will operate across 84 kilometers in the twin cities, offering passengers modern travel facilities. Each bus is equipped with Wi-Fi, GPS tracking, and mobile charging ports, ensuring a comfortable and connected commuting experience.
Under the initiative, senior citizens aged 60 and above will travel free of cost, while the standard fare is set at Rs20 per ticket.
PML-N Rawalpindi Division President Malik Abrar Ahmed stated that the 87 electric buses will operate on four designated routes, launched in phases. The first route will run from Rawat to Motorway Chowk, offering a safe, reliable, and energy-efficient commuting option for residents.
The project’s inauguration, initially scheduled for October 15, was postponed following civil unrest by Tehreek-i-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) across Punjab. However, officials confirmed that the launch will take place soon once the situation normalizes.
