The Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Traffic Police has urged Karachi residents to obtain valid driving licences to avoid penalties as part of the city’s stricter traffic enforcement drive.
According to the DIG, anyone caught driving without a valid licence will face a fine of Rs. 20,000. It is important to note that this fine specifically applies to motorcycle riders operating without a licence.
However, under the broader penalty structure, fines vary by vehicle type. Drivers of light transport vehicles (LTVs) can face penalties of up to Rs. 30,000, while heavy transport vehicle (HTV) drivers may be fined as much as Rs. 50,000 for the same violation.
In the past 24 hours alone, traffic police issued more than 4,000 e-challans across Karachi for various violations. The highest number — 2,737 challans — were issued for not wearing seat belts.
The report also showed that 812 motorists were fined for riding without helmets, 116 for speeding, 169 for jumping red lights, and 157 for using mobile phones while driving. Additionally, 24 challans were issued for illegal parking, four for overloading, 23 for stop-line violations, eight for wrong-way driving, and 56 for tinted windows.
DIG Traffic said the e-challaning system has been fully activated to improve compliance with traffic laws rather than to penalize citizens. “No one is exempted from following the rules,” he added, noting that the speed limit for all vehicles is 60 km/h, and violators will be fined accordingly.
