The Karachi Traffic Police have announced new discounts and concessions aimed at promoting timely payment of e-challan fines for traffic violations.
Under the new policy, first-time violators can avoid paying their fine by submitting a written apology. For a second violation, motorists who clear their fines within 14 days will receive a 50% discount. However, all fines must be paid within 21 days, after which the full amount becomes payable.
For example, a signal-jumping fine of Rs. 5,000 can be reduced to Rs. 2,500 if paid within the two-week grace period. Officials confirmed that all e-challans settled within 14 days qualify for the discount.
Meanwhile, the department faced public criticism after a traffic police officer was caught on camera riding a motorcycle without a visible number plate near Karachi’s Expo Center. The viral video shows the officer using the wrong indicator and carrying a pistol while on duty, sparking outrage over the “double standards” of traffic enforcers.
The E-Challan system itself is also under fire for technical errors and poor coordination. In one case, a citizen received a Rs. 5,000 fine for riding a motorcycle stolen in 2020, while another man was penalized for a helmet violation at a time when he was reportedly at home.
Both incidents have raised serious concerns about the accuracy and reliability of Karachi’s automated traffic monitoring system. Citizens are now urging authorities to review and reform the e-challan process to prevent false penalties and restore public trust.
