Karachi University Students Develop Anti-Depressant Goggles

Students from the University of Karachi’s Pharmacy Department have stunned experts by developing groundbreaking health-related innovations — including Anti-Depressant Goggles, a Smart Medicine Dispenser, Sip Dose smart straws, and an eco-friendly CoolPod for insulin storage.

Despite Pakistan lagging in scientific innovation, these young researchers have combined modern science, user-friendly technology, and environmental sustainability to create low-cost, practical healthcare solutions.

Anti-Depressant Goggles

Students Neha Shah and Javeria Latif designed special goggles that combine visual, audio, and aroma therapy to help people suffering from depression, anxiety, and sleep disorders.

The goggles feature blue light therapy, lavender essential oils, and Bluetooth connectivity for soothing music. According to initial trials, users experienced up to 70% improvement in mood and sleep quality. The device costs around Rs. 3,500 and runs for two days on a single charge.

Sip Dose – The Smart Medicine Straw

Another student group introduced “Sip Dose”, a smart straw pre-filled with an accurate dose of liquid medicine. It helps children, elderly patients, and people with tremors or vision impairments take the correct amount safely.

The straw includes Braille labeling, a QR code for digital dose reminders, and is made from 50% biodegradable and 100% recyclable materials — making it both patient- and eco-friendly.

Smart Medicine Dispenser

Led by Arisha Ateeq, another group created a Smart Medicine Dispenser to prevent misuse and overdose of medicines like tranquilizers and antidepressants.

The device allows pharmacists to program medication schedules. It only unlocks the correct dose at the specified time — indicated by green and red LED lights. The dispenser costs around Rs. 2,000 and is especially useful for the elderly, Alzheimer’s, and psychiatric patients.

The team plans to present the device to the Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan (DRAP) for formal approval.

CoolPod – Eco-Friendly Cooling Device

A fourth group, led by Samia and Syeda Sania Fatima, developed CoolPod, a portable cooling device for insulin and vaccines.

Designed for diabetic patients and health workers in remote or disaster-hit areas, the device keeps medicines cool for up to 8 hours using Phase Change Material (PCM) and Cooling Gel. It is reusable, biodegradable, and will soon include real-time temperature monitoring.

Experts hailed these student projects as symbols of Pakistan’s emerging potential in scientific innovation, combining public health improvement with sustainable technology.
