Oman Increases Expat Residency Card Validity

In a significant policy shift, Oman has extended the validity of expatriate residency cards from three years to ten years, marking a major update to the country’s residency regulations.

The decision was issued by Lieutenant General Hassan bin Mohsin Al Shuraiqi, Inspector General of Police and Customs, and officially amends the executive regulations of the Civil Status Law, according to a report published by Atheer newspaper.

Key Details of the New Regulation

Under the new rules, expatriate residency cards will now be valid for up to 10 years, offering greater stability and convenience for foreign residents. Cardholders are required to renew their ID cards within 30 days of expiry to remain compliant with Omani law.

The regulation also sets clear issuance and renewal fees at five Omani rials per year, while a replacement card for lost or damaged IDs will cost 20 Omani rials.

Previous Residency Card Policy

Before this amendment, a decision issued in August 2024 limited residency card validity to one, two, or three years.

The new 10-year validity represents a major administrative improvement, aimed at reducing bureaucracy and simplifying long-term residency procedures for expatriates.

Why the Change Matters

The updated policy is expected to enhance Oman’s appeal as a long-term destination for professionals, investors, and expatriate families.

By extending card validity and streamlining renewal requirements, the government seeks to improve efficiency and support the Sultanate’s Vision 2040 goals for modernization and economic diversification.
