The Punjab government has sanctioned a monthly allowance of Rs. 12,000 for 5,000 registered visually impaired individuals to enhance their financial stability and promote social inclusion, according to an official handout.
A spokesperson for the Social Welfare and Bait-ul-Mal Department stated that Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz approved the initiative as part of her commitment to improving the lives of visually impaired citizens across the province.
The department confirmed that talks with representatives of visually impaired protesters had been successfully concluded. Acting on the directives of Social Welfare Minister Sohail Shaukat Butt, senior officials and Director General Tariq Qureshi held several meetings with the protestors’ representatives to resolve their concerns.
The spokesperson further announced that a dedicated job quota has been introduced for visually impaired persons within the existing 3% disability quota. All government departments have been directed to promptly enforce this policy and advertise the relevant vacant positions reserved for differently abled candidates.
In other news, Government College University (GCU) Lahore’s Syndicate approved full tuition fee waivers for students with physical disabilities. The decision was made during the Syndicate’s 72nd meeting.
Key welfare measures include health insurance for faculty, higher remuneration for staff, and reduced PhD and daycare fees.
