Mate X8 Leak Claims 20GB RAM and Major Redesign Coming Next Year

Huawei appears set to skip another number in its foldable lineup. Early leaks suggest the company will bypass the Mate X7 entirely and launch the Mate X8 instead. The first signs come from accessory makers, who have already begun preparing screen protectors and cases labeled “Mate X8,” indicating that the X7 may not exist at all.

Big Jump in Memory

The Mate X8 is rumored to include 20GB of RAM, a notable increase from the 16GB offered on the Mate X6. If accurate, this would make the device one of the most memory-heavy foldables on the market, aimed at users running large apps, advanced multitasking, and on-device AI features.

The foldable is also expected to use Huawei’s upcoming Kirin 9030 chipset, which is believed to replace the Kirin 9020 used in the Mate X6. The Mate 80 series is also rumored to pair the same processor with the same high-memory configuration, suggesting Huawei is pushing RAM upgrades across multiple flagship lines.

New Design Expected

Leaker Fixed Focus Digital claims the Mate X8 will introduce a “completely revamped” design compared to last year’s model. Several concept sketches were shared online, and while the source said one of them is close to the actual device, they did not confirm which one. The changes appear to focus heavily on the camera layout and the overall appearance of the foldable.

Competing in a Busy Foldable Market

Most major 2025 book-style foldables have already been announced, including the Pixel 10 Pro Fold, Vivo X Fold5, Honor Magic V5, Oppo Find N5, and Samsung Galaxy Z Fold7. Xiaomi is also reconsidering its naming strategy, preparing the Xiaomi 17 Fold for early 2026.

Huawei, however, seems to be taking a different approach by skipping a model number, increasing RAM, and delivering a redesigned exterior. If the leaks turn out to be accurate, the Mate X8 may end up being one of next year’s more noteworthy foldables.
