Karachi Announces Strict Penalties for Number Plate Tampering

DIG Traffic Peer Muhammad Shah has issued a strict warning for anyone tampering with vehicle number plates or attempting to dodge the city’s AI powered e-challan system. He said the traffic police will take firm action against violators as the department moves to tighten enforcement across Karachi.

In a recent statement, he said that tampering with, scratching, or altering number plates is a criminal offense and will lead to arrest. He added that vehicles using fake plates or plates not properly transferred will be blacklisted in police and excise databases, with cases sent to the relevant authorities for legal action.

DIG Shah also defended the city’s digital enforcement system, which has triggered strong public reactions due to higher fines. He said the purpose of strict penalties is to change driving behavior, not match affordability.

According to him, Karachi previously recorded three traffic deaths a day, but the number has fallen to two per day after smart enforcement began.

He said the department’s goal is to further reduce fatalities and improve road safety. He also noted that 11 Sahulat Centers across the city now offer first time offenders a one time waiver, ensuring the system remains strict but fair.

DIG Shah added that only part of Karachi is currently covered by smart cameras, yet the change in driving habits is already visible.
