Dates Revealed for First Spell of Winter Rains

The Balochistan Meteorological Department has issued a positive forecast for the province’s drought-hit areas, predicting widespread rainfall with thunder and lightning in December. Officials said a strong system of western winds will likely bring the first major spell of winter rains between December 6 and 10.

Meteorologists expect intermittent showers to continue through the month. They said the coming system could ease drought conditions in Zhob, Sherani, Musa Khel, Barkhan, Kohlu, Sibi, Lasbela, Awaran, Kech, Gwadar, Panjgur, Khuzdar, Qila Saifullah, Chagai, Noshki, Washuk and Mastung.

Some regions may receive heavy downpours, while higher elevations could see snowfall. Experts noted that northwestern winds are unusually active this year and steady moisture from the Arabian Sea will support a prolonged rainy pattern.

They added that the rain may help replenish dams and groundwater across the province. The forecast has raised cautious hope among farmers and rural communities facing a severe water shortage. In several areas, residents gathered in mosques to offer voluntary prayers for relief and renewed water supplies.

The Met Department urged the public to stay alert, especially in locations near streams and seasonal water channels. Officials warned that heavy rain could trigger flash flooding. Balochistan remains in the grip of a long drought, with 12 districts currently classified under severe drought conditions.
