Google to Compete With MacBook Pros and Budget Laptops Alike With New Aluminum OS Laptops

ChromeOS has been a major success for Google, giving the company a strong position in the laptop market without directly challenging premium devices. The platform has been used mainly for affordable notebooks designed for students who cannot afford premium laptops.

Google never intended ChromeOS to compete with Windows or macOS, nor did it aim to rival high-end machines like the MacBook Air or MacBook Pro.

That approach is now changing. With AI becoming central to modern computing, Google is preparing a major shift that will merge ChromeOS and Android into a new operating system called Aluminium OS. This platform will include AI at its core and will run on a range of devices, including laptops designed to compete with Apple’s flagship MacBooks.

Multiple Device Categories Planned

Google also outlined the range of form factors it envisions for ChromeOS and Aluminium OS, including laptops, detachables, tablets, and set-top boxes. The company does not intend to remove ChromeOS devices immediately. Instead, the product lineup will include Chromebook, Chromebook Plus, AL Entry, AL Mass Premium, and AL Premium, with “AL” referring to Aluminium OS. The job listing makes clear that the senior product manager will eventually help transition Google “from ChromeOS to Aluminium with business continuity in the future.”

Android–ChromeOS Merger

These details surfaced through a Google job listing posted two months ago, recently spotted by Android Authority. The company was hiring a “Senior Product Manager, Android, Laptop and Tablets,” although applications for the position have since closed.

Google has already acknowledged its plans. In July, Android ecosystem president Sameer Samat confirmed that the company would combine ChromeOS and Android. Speaking later at Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Summit, Samat said Google intends to “accelerate all the AI advancements that we’re doing on Android and bring that to the laptop form factor as rapidly as possible.” He also explained that Google is “taking the ChromeOS experience and re-baselining the technology underneath it on Android,” hinting at a 2026 launch.

The Aluminium OS job listing reveals more. According to the description, the team is “working on a new Aluminium, Android-based operating system and a new focus on Premium devices and experiences.” The ad also states that Aluminium OS is being built with AI “at the core.”

Why Google Needs AI-Optimized Laptops

The move comes as Apple and Microsoft shift aggressively toward AI-focused computing. Apple now markets its M4 and M5 MacBooks as AI-ready systems, while Microsoft is integrating Copilot deeply into Windows. Although Google has made major advances with AI on mobile, ChromeOS is not designed to deliver high-end Gemini experiences in the same way.

Users can access Gemini through any browser, but the future of AI involves more autonomous tools capable of controlling apps and possibly managing entire operating systems. To support this, Google needs an advanced PC operating system of its own, along with premium hardware that can appeal to high-end buyers.

For that reason, likely, Google will eventually release its own Aluminium OS laptops and desktops to highlight what Gemini can achieve on larger screens. Google is taking a similar approach with extended-reality products. Android XR, powered by Gemini, is being developed for smart glasses and spatial computing devices similar to Apple’s Vision Pro.
