Karachi’s newly enforced e-challan system is facing complications as 20 of the city’s 89 traffic signals remain non-functional, according to DIG Traffic Peer Muhammad Shah. He said only 69 traffic signals across the city are currently operational, which is creating challenges for automated enforcement.
Comparing Karachi’s infrastructure with other major cities, the DIG noted that Mumbai has 569 LED traffic signals while New Delhi has 2,160, highlighting how far Karachi lags behind in modern traffic management.
Shah said the limited number of functional signals makes it difficult for the AI-based system to reliably identify and process violations at several intersections. He added that the city needs 400 modern, automated traffic signals.
Under the new upgrade plan, authorities intend to install smart signals capable of managing traffic automatically. One such advanced signal has already been installed at PIDC as part of the pilot phase.
