Over 600 E-Challans Issued Across Rawalpindi in Four Days

Rawalpindi has officially rolled out an e-challan system to curb traffic violations, with authorities reporting the issuance of 600 fines within the first four days of operation.

According to SSP Safe City Rawalpindi, Rana Abdul Wahab, more than 2,100 cameras across 360 locations are now linked to the e-challan system through the Safe City Command and Control Centre. The network, which was already used for security monitoring and traffic management, now records violations automatically and sends challan notices directly to vehicle owners.

Speaking at a press briefing alongside SP Safe City Razaullah Shah and DSP Safe City Kashif Riaz, Wahab explained that the system is powered by Artificial Intelligence-enabled smart cameras, which can monitor 19 categories of traffic violations across major roads and cantonment areas.

Over 300 cases are currently being monitored across the city, with supporting evidence recorded for every violation before challans are issued.

Wahab added that surveillance is not limited to redevelopment sites like Kachehri Chowk but extends to alternative routes as well. While all motorists are subject to the law, VIP movement is managed under specific operational protocols. Challans issued date back to August, but no fines older than 24 hours or predating 22 November are being generated under the new system.

The SSP also highlighted that Safe City initiatives include air-quality monitoring, with devices installed at 41 project sites to assist relevant departments in managing pollution. The program aims to be fully operational across all tehsils of Rawalpindi by 31 December.

In addition, Wahab emphasized that the Traffic Police remain the main authority for traffic enforcement. Citizens who dispute a challan can appeal before a magistrate. Recommendations for improvements to road infrastructure will also be submitted to enhance overall safety.

The Safe City project also features public safety measures, including panic buttons throughout the city and a blood donor database with over 14,000 registered donors. Each district is tasked with registering 25 new donors daily.
