WhatsApp has announced significant changes to its terms of service, which will restrict users from using non-Meta AI chatbots within the messaging app. Starting January 15th, 2026, third-party AI chatbots like ChatGPT and Microsoft’s Copilot will no longer be permitted on the platform. This marks the end of third-party AI integrations, affecting both individual users and WhatsApp Business accounts.
The move comes as WhatsApp seeks to limit the types of AI chatbots available within the app. As part of these changes, users will no longer be able to interact with non-Meta AI chatbots after January 15th, 2026. WhatsApp Business users, who have been able to integrate tools like ChatGPT and Copilot, will also lose access to these services at that time.
Meta’s decision to ban third-party AI chatbots follows a series of departures from the platform. Last month, OpenAI confirmed that ChatGPT would no longer be available on WhatsApp. Just earlier this week, Microsoft also announced that its Copilot would be removed from the platform.
While most users will be impacted by this change, WhatsApp will allow businesses that use AI bots to serve their customers to continue operating within the app. These businesses will still be able to integrate AI chatbots into their customer service operations.
Additionally, users who currently use ChatGPT on WhatsApp will be able to migrate their chat history. However, Copilot users will not have the same option to transfer their conversation data when the chatbot is removed.
