Net Metering Becomes Pakistan’s Cheapest Power Source as Solar Surpasses Grid

DISCOs have sharply increased their purchase of electricity from net metering consumers.

According to official documents seen by ProPakistani, there has been a total procurement of 573.7 million units over the past four months. This growth comes despite proposals to reduce the net metering tariff, and has played a direct role in lowering monthly Fuel Charge Adjustments for all consumers.

The fuel cost of electricity generated by net metering consumers is effectively zero, and this zero-cost input has been factored into the latest FCA determinations issued by NEPRA. Officials noted that the rising share of net metering units has eased overall fuel costs for power companies and provided relief across consumer categories.

Month-wise data shows DISCOs purchased 115.095 million units in July, 111.4 million in August, and 142.6 million in September, with October recording the highest procurement among the four months.

MEPCO led with 157.764 million units purchased, followed by IESCO at 139.7 million and LESCO at 134.255 million units. GEPCO procured 57.6 million, while FESCO bought 46.5 million units.

PESCO purchased 26 million units, HESCO 37 million units, another 39 million units under HESCO’s net metering inflow, and SEPCO 16.5 million units. Qesco recorded procurement of 17.4 million units, while TESCO bought 590,000 units during the same period.

Officials said the rising contribution of solar-fed net metering is emerging as a major factor in monthly fuel cost stability, even as national debate continues over revising net metering tariffs.

  • Wrong. No it didn’t. We were forced to go to solar and we had to millions to get it. Some people had to take loans to install it.
Not to mention pay more for the green meter.

  • Is bcz is solar that even during summer , people are no longer affected by electricity issues.

Thanks to China to help make it somewhat affordable.

  • tax free import of solar + cheap china prices allowed rapid adoption. Even today a 585W panel which used to cost 60k to 80k now costs Rs18k to Rs19k . i have 10kw system in islamabad and even nowadays with shorter days dirty panels I am getting 25 to 28 units per day . In summer its usually 40 to 60 units

  • on one side contracts we pay for unused electricity, electricity theft, line losses, mismangment and then capacity payments.
On other side a consumer make all investments from his own pockets and produce energy and use for himself and sell it to the state.

And planners think they should pay less amount to the individual investor / producer.
    Totally wrong and unfair.

It is also against teachings of quran as. mentioned in surah Rahman.

Sate should be thankful to that little individual producer that he is not only lifting his own burden but even contributing to nation.
Now state should plan to provide cheap electricity to industry so that they can run bcz state is getting energy without any investments fear of capacity charges and so on.
If industry moves jobs are created more things are produced, less imports, less crime and living standard rises plus more revenue for state.
Think big and out of the box.
    Alhamdolilah

  • thanks china for giving us cheap solar. otherwise the plan was suck money from everyone and give to IPPs from next 30 years !!!

  • NEPRA should change buy back rate of solar power and DESCO should utilized this saving to install storage battery system to enhance stability of s ystem.
