The National Highway Authority (NHA) will invest more than Rs. 22 billion in two major road projects designed to improve connectivity and support economic development in the Gilgit region.
Documents show that NHA has approved construction of the 153-kilometer Chitral–Booni–Mastuj–Shandur (CBMS) Road and the 46-kilometer Chitral–Ayun–Bumburate (CAB) Road, bringing the total cost to Rs. 22.44 billion.
According to project details, the CBMS Road carries an estimated cost of Rs. 17.78 billion and will be built as a two-lane route with a 100-meter right of way. The project is divided into four sections from Chitral to Shandur, and physical work has already started.
Once completed, the road will connect N-45 and N-35, providing an alternative route during heavy snowfall and improving access for traders and residents across Upper Chitral.
The CAB Road, estimated at Rs. 4.65 billion, has also entered its construction phase. The project will enhance access to Ayun Valley and the Kalash Valley, supporting mobility in key tourist and residential areas.
Officials say the new routes will reduce travel time, ease congestion, and open economic opportunities by improving transport of agricultural goods, gemstones, handicrafts, and other local products.
They also expect the upgraded roads to boost tourism and improve access to schools, hospitals, and government services for more than 350,000 residents.
