Karachi Extends Rickshaw Ban to 26 Major Roads

Authorities in Karachi extended the ban on two-seater and four-seater rickshaws on Thursday, adding six more major roads to the existing restrictions as traffic congestion continues to worsen in the city.

Karachi Commissioner Syed Hasan Naqvi announced the decision after receiving a recommendation from Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Traffic Peer Muhammad Shah. The administration enforced the order under Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC).

The latest directive stated that the government had already prohibited rickshaws on 20 major roads through a notification issued on October 17, 2025. With the new extension, the restrictions now apply to 26 major arteries, including Shahrah-e-Faisal.

Officials said the expanded ban aims to improve traffic movement across Karachi.

The restricted roads include Sharea Faisal, II Chundrigar Road, Shahrah-e-Quaideen, Shershah Suri Road, Shaheed-e-Millat Road, Abdullah Haroon Road to Do Talwar, Shahrah-e-Firdousi, Stadium Road, Sir Shah Suleman Road, Rashid Minhas Road, Mauripur Road, Shahrah-e-Pakistan, Hub River Road, Quaidabad to Landhi 89, University Road, Korangi Road from FTC to Qayyumabad, Korangi Road from Qayyumabad to Korangi Crossing, Orangi Road, Super Highway to Malir Halt, and Surjani to Sohrab Goth.

The government issued the latest order after the city experienced severe congestion and rising public frustration over gridlocked roads. The Sindh government also imposed a daytime ban on heavy vehicles and enforced a 30-kilometer-per-hour speed limit for heavy transport vehicles (HTVs) to ease pressure on Karachi’s busiest routes.
