Justin Greaves produced one of the great modern Test rearguards as West Indies escaped with a stunning draw against New Zealand, securing their first points of the 2025–27 World Test Championship in Christchurch.
Set a monumental 531 to win, West Indies batted 163.3 overs in the fourth innings, their longest final-innings effort in almost a century, to close on 457 for 6.
Greaves led the resistance with a heroic unbeaten 202 from 388 balls, batting longer in this single innings than in the rest of his 12-Test career combined. After supporting Shai Hope during a vital 196-run stand that revived the innings from 92 for 4 on Day 3, Greaves took full responsibility once Hope (140) and Tevin Imlach fell in quick succession.
He brought up his maiden double-century in the second-last over of the match, slicing Jacob Duffy over backward point for only his second boundary of the final session.
Kemar Roach played the innings of his life at the other end. The 37-year-old, returning to the side, survived 233 deliveries for an unbeaten 58, his highest first-class score. Remarkably, he scored just five runs off his final 104 balls as he and Greaves blunted New Zealand’s increasingly desperate attack under the blazing late-afternoon sun on a flattening Hagley Oval pitch.
There was also umpiring drama. New Zealand felt aggrieved when Roach appeared to edge Bracewell to Tom Latham. Still, with all reviews exhausted, the decision stayed with Alex Wharf, who moments earlier had correctly denied an obvious caught-behind appeal.
