The Lahore High Court on Friday directed the Environment Protection Department to take action against smoke-emitting police vehicles. Justice Shahid Karim issued the order while hearing petitions on smog control and environmental matters.
He instructed the department to inspect all police vehicles as well as those belonging to government offices, including educational institutions.
During the proceedings, Justice Karim also directed the Parks and Horticulture Authority to form a committee and submit a detailed report on tree cutting. He asked the authority to provide its policy for relocating trees and questioned how 123 trees were shifted without PHA’s knowledge.
The judge remarked that the city does not belong to any single minister and said the Lahore Development Authority must publicize its projects and give citizens complete information. He advised the LDA to meet those protesting against tree removal and address their concerns, noting that a lack of transparency creates problems.
Justice Karim further suggested that authorities consider making Sundays free of commercial activity. The court will resume the hearing on December 12.
