CDA Unveils Rs. 12 billion Plan for Modern International Cricket Stadium in Islamabad

The Capital Development Authority has finalized detailed plans for a new international cricket stadium in Islamabad, estimating a project cost of Rs. 12 billion.

The project will be adopting design features inspired by some of the world’s leading cricket venues, including the Dubai International Stadium.

According to official documents, the stadium will be built near Sector D 12 at the base of the Margalla Hills, giving the venue a natural backdrop and a central location within the capital.

The proposed seating capacity is 25,000 with a pitch diameter of 148 meters. The layout follows a three-tier structure. The lower tier will serve general spectators, the middle tier will cater to VIP and premium seating, and the upper tier will provide shaded viewing areas.

CDA officials said the design aims to improve crowd flow, ensure clear sightlines and deliver a better match day experience for fans.

One of the most advanced features under consideration is the Ring of Fire LED lighting system, similar to the one used in Dubai.

The system is mounted along the stadium roof rather than on tall floodlight towers, providing uniform ground illumination with fewer shadows and reduced structural obstruction for spectators. MUSCO Sports Lighting, used in several top-tier stadiums, has been listed as the benchmark.

The authority is also evaluating several roofing options. These include tensile fabric structures similar to the Melbourne Cricket Ground, steel and polycarbonate semi-transparent roofs like those at Lords and the Sydney Cricket Ground, and even retractable systems used at Wembley and Marvel Stadium.

The final selection will depend on climate suitability and long-term maintenance needs.

CDA said the project is expected to become a landmark facility that strengthens Islamabad’s sports infrastructure and enhances Pakistan’s ability to host major international cricket events.

Officials believe the stadium’s location at the foot of the Margalla Hills will make it one of the capital’s most prominent architectural and sporting destinations.

  • With CDA and NESPAK’s redundant design and engineering capacity. An international design and consulting firm should be hired to ensure we don’t create another parody of world famous stadiums. There should be an EIA and public hearing before the start of construction work since it is located in Zone III.

  • Isn’t the CDA cash starved? That’s what I’ve always read regarding development of new sectors or rectification of problems in existing Islamabad.

  • CDA has failed to complete a small Sector E 12 in 38 years but happily embarks on a new project on Green margala hills obviously to mint money

  • CDA plans a “world leading” stadium with a seating capacity of 25,000 lol.

Seating capacity should be atleast 60,000 to cater to demand of popular matches like PSL.
