The star batter Babar Azam has arrived in Australia ahead of the start of Big Bash League (BBL) 15 and has officially joined the Sydney Sixers.
His arrival has lifted excitement around the competition, especially with several leading Pakistani players set to feature this season. This move also gives Babar a fresh opportunity to display his class in one of the world’s top T20 leagues.
Babar’s move to the Sixers was confirmed earlier in June, and the franchise has described his contract as one of the biggest in BBL history. The Pakistan star batter will be available for the entire BBL 15 season, including the finals, making him a key figure in the team’s push for the title.
The Sixers already have a strong squad, and Babar’s addition further boosts their batting strength. With a blend of experienced Australian and overseas players, his presence is expected to bring stability and confidence at the top of the order.
Reports are emerging that although Steve Smith is part of the Sixers squad, he will not be able to join the team immediately due to his Ashes commitments. With Smith unavailable early in the tournament, Josh Philippe is expected to open the innings, with Babar Azam likely to partner him at the top.
This pairing fits naturally: Philippe can take on the aggressive role, while Babar can anchor the innings and guide partnerships.
Babar has been Pakistan’s most successful T20I opener, scoring 2,973 runs at a strike rate of 130.57 in that position. His best performances have come while opening, and the bounce and pace of Australian pitches suit his timing-based batting style, making the move even more promising.
BBL 15 will run from 14 December to 25 January 2026, featuring 44 prime-time early-evening matches. The opening match will see the Perth Scorchers take on the Sydney Sixers.
