Open manholes across Karachi continue to pose a deadly threat to citizens, with several accidents reported in recent months.
Just recently, a three-year-old boy, Ibrahim, reportedly fell into an uncovered manhole near NIPA Chowrangi, raising public alarm.
Now, the hazard has extended to hospitals. At Jinnah Hospital, one of Karachi’s largest public healthcare facilities, missing manhole covers in front of the OPD complex are putting thousands of patients and attendants at risk daily.
Visitors and caregivers are forced to cross these uncovered drains, with no protective signs or barriers to prevent accidents, especially for motorcyclists or during nighttime visits.
A caregiver said, “Even the hospital’s main pathway has open manholes with no covers or warning signs. It seems authorities are waiting for an accident to happen before taking action.”
Authorities have been urged to install covers immediately and secure all open manholes in hospitals and public areas to prevent further tragedies.
