Pakistan has successfully performed its first “Non-Touch” Retrograde Intrarenal Surgery (RIRS) for kidney stones, marking a breakthrough in minimally invasive urology.
The pioneering procedure was carried out by Dr. Shabbir Hussain Chaudhry, a leading endourologist and faculty member of the Asian Urological Society of Endoluminal Surgery and Technology (AUEST).
Dr. Shabbir used advanced endoscopes and a high-precision laser to break kidney stones without direct instrument contact, making the surgery completely scar-free.
The innovative technique was completed without pre-stenting, without a Ureteral Access Sheath (UAS/FANS), without C-Arm fluoroscopy, and without general anesthesia, a rare achievement in endourology.
Despite these constraints, the procedure delivered 100% clearance of two kidney stones, demonstrating exceptional safety and efficiency.
Dr. Shabbir operated using one of the world’s most advanced flexible ureteroscopes, supported by laser technology functioning in three specialized modes.
This operation marks his 10th successful Non-Touch RIRS performed in a private healthcare setting, reinforcing his leadership in introducing cutting-edge, minimally invasive techniques in Pakistan.
Medical experts have praised the milestone as a major step toward radiation-free, anesthesia-sparing, and patient-friendly kidney stone treatment in the country.
